May 21-27 view of the Loop Current in the eastern Gulf of Mexico.

On May 27, the first filament from the BP oil spill is seen approaching the Florida coast.

The leading edge is approximately 20 miles west of the Dry Tortugas in the Florida Keys.

Surface currents in the Loop Current travel between 1 and 3 miles per hour, or 25 to 75 miles a day.

  • @tealmarlin and what about the Cubans? the Havana coastline is right there too.

BP has unleashed an international environmental disaster. if these oil 'leaks' are not stopped soon, much of the Gulf coast will be blackened with crude. 50 million barrels of crude oil, dumped into an ocean basin.

BP are environmental criminals, and all we can do is tell them to 'clean up their mess'?? our priorities are screwed.

  • The Florida Keys are some of the most amazing places on earth. I am glad I got to see the Keys before BP's oil spill hits them.

But I mourn for the losses of the people living there. As I mourn for the many other places and people that have been, and will continue to be, affected by this completely preventable disaster. Affected if not for years, then for DECADES.

Senator Hutchinson delivered the below speech on the Senate floor last night and introduced the bill to waive the Jones Act to assist the oil spill clean up this morning. The bill is cosponsored by Sens. LeMieux (R-Fla.) and Cornyn (R-Texas).

I AM NOT LYING!!!!...THE JONES ACT HAS NOT BEEN WAIVED!!!

  • @MELISSA84008 please stop lying. it doesn't help. there are ships from many countries helping. go to factcheckdotorg or politifactdotcom

  • @GhostInTheShell29 He hasn't lifted the act....I've been telling ppl to call the White House n Reps for weeks to waive the Jones Act...

  • If a person accidentally runs someone over with their car, in the United States that person can and many times is charged with Man Slaughter. While the Gulf Spill may be an accident, this does NOT abstain BP from criminal wrong doing. Their needs to be hearings already, before people start to riot.

  • well for sure you will never eat the same and the mardi grai, pardon the spelling, will never be the same. what food??? oil shrimp? real sea bass tar tar, why don't you get the fuck out before you die!!! you will, soon that stuff will be in everything, yes even the ground water. if that is not enough, the next few rain storms should be interesting, all plants will die . so get out your life is worth more than things or stuff. take the money and R U N, don't take too lng they will shortU
