Three Malayan tiger cubs and their mother pounced and played with carved pumpkins in their exhibit today at the San Diego Zoo. The six-month-old cubs bounded toward the orange orbs, sniffing at them before knocking the tops off to get at the ground meat inside. Menderu, a male cub, carried the top of one pumpkin around by the stem, playing keep-away with his sisters, Seri and Jin.
Tigers are an endangered species. The San Diego Zoo is part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums species survival plan that pairs rare and endangered animals together. For the survival of this species the cubs may go to other accredited zoos to be paired up with other tigers. In fact the father of these cubs is on loan to the San Diego Zoo as part of the species survival plan.
