Shot by an employee in'68 then lost for almost 40 years. Here's how they used to hump rail cars as only a switchman on that hump could see it. The full 51 minute DVD is available from the Illinois Central Historical Society at

  • I didn't know they humped cabooses.

  • That is older than 1968, more like 1948......

  • Kind of funny to read about CN leveling that yard. My oldest son works at the CN Harrison yard in Memphis and they just redid the hump there as IC cut it back some years ago. They did tear down the old roundhouse although the turntable and associated tracks are still used.

  • Nice vid of the oldtimers doing it.

  • Modeling the retarders is too difficult. I used a 30psi air compressor, plastic aquarium tubing, and brass tubing crimped at the end to focus the air; mounted them at a 45 degree angle toward the oncoming cars right between the ties. Manifolds for multiple tracks can be found at the pet store, too. Make sure to get ones that shut off the air completely. My hump is 12'' high and the yard 25' long. Athearn SD40's w/ ernst gearing for slow speed to boot. Good luck!

  • I saw a hump yard like this at the Big 4 railyard near Indianapolis, IN. Probably the coolest thing I've ever seen.....trying to build one in HO scale is a pisser.

  • Did they even hump a caboose at the end there? Didn't see that one coming... :)

  • This is how switching is still done in CPR's Winnipeg Yard

  • i loved riding i.c. smooth and fast as ever.....

  • The good old days ! Like it alot !
