Surf Green - A modern surf rock song inspired by Miserlou by Dick Dale. This is an original piece written by me. I recorded the guitars using an American Stratocaster and an Ibanez Jet King II. The amps used were a Mesa Boogie Lonestar for the clean reverb parts and an Egnater Rebel 20 for the distorted lead parts and the outro. The bass was done with a Warwick Rock Bass plugged into an old Line 6 TonePort UX2.

The drum kit is a Mapex Saturn Special Edition Birch 5 Star Drum Shops set. The heads are all the original Remo Emperor batters with Ambassador resonants. The batter heads are tuned loose while the resonant heads are a little tighter. The snare is a DW Collector Series Copper 4x14 power piccolo. The head on that one is a simple Aquarian Z100 Texture Coated. A true great sounding inexpensive head. The cymbals are my personal favorites Zildjian K Custom Dark.

The filming was all done with 3 Go Pro HD Hero cameras. The POV angle is shot using a Chesty camera mount.

Eighth microphones were used all plugged into a Mackie Onyx soundboard plugged via firewire into an iMac running Logic Pro 8. The original drums of the recording were removed and I then recorded this live version of the drum parts. A little different and a little more energetic than the original.

Enjoy! Let me know if you are interested in buying the song. I can supply both this version and the original for a buck. Special licensing is available for commercial videos. Please subscribe to my YouTube Channel. -Danny

  • which one is the pov camera? the one in the front? how did you mount the gopro to the roof?

  • @wrightdrumlessons The POV is the one where you can see the sticks wailing away in front of me. Short clips. I stuck the camera to the roof, to one of the beams that support the acoustic ceiling using one of the flat Go Pro sticky pads. Thanks for watching.

  • how do you tune your toms/kick?

  • @MikeDrumsForFun resonant heads tighter than batters. Always.

  • @sixstringsensei let's put it this way; i have evans ec2's and remo resonant heads, 12, 14, and 16 toms.. if i want a similar tone as your toms how many turns do you THINK i should do for the reso and batter of my 12"? approximately.. using your knowledge XD.

    Sorry?

  • @MikeDrumsForFun It would be impossible to calculate it like that no even if the heads match. Because it depends on whether or not the heads are borken-in or not. Plus, I use very different heads. Emperor clears on top, ambassador clears bottom. Search for Dave Weckl tuning video on YouTube. Also, my sound is heavily processed through the mics, recording app and plug-ins. EQ, compression, etc. You need to find what sounds good to your ears live.
