Strange, this. Postmodern mixture of Cuban music, chachacha, jazz and Chinese music. Sounds like sth. from the fifties to my ears, but it probably isn't. Whenever I've heard this one, I whistle it the whole day long. Only record in the Winin' Boy collection sung in Chinese, but probably recorded in NY?

  • What a find!!! My grandfather used to have a whole set of 78-rpms of this vintage (about 1952) and every Saturday morning I would go to his and Grandma's house and we would play them. Even the gramophone is pretty well the same as his was. "An Autumn Melody" was one of my favourites (the other side was "Rose, Rose I Love You" sung in Chinese). Thanks for bringing back wonderful memories of Grandma's House.

  • I was recently doing some DJ-ing with my 78's again - which I do quite often - and played this record and a chinese woman spontaneously began to sing along! She told me she had learnt the song from her mother and was so glad to hear it again after all those years. She told me all about her and her mother's life in China back in the 30's and 40's. I tell you, that encounter (and your comment) really made my day!

  • The singer Yao Li who sang this is still alive. She probably recorded this sometime in the 30s to 40s. The sound is reminiscent of that era when Shanghai was the Hollywood of the Orient. The other famous songbird from this era was Zhou Xuan.

  • That's great info, thanks! Her name is written "Hue Lee" on the record label.

  • Ms. Yao lee recorded this song along side with Rose2 I love you, that was recorded in 1940 if you follow the ID number on the original Shanghai Pathé records which i currently own one.

  • Oh my God I love this. I had a 78 of this when I was at college in the 1970's . All us art students loved her.

  • Wonderful posting, wonderful story. Thanks.

  • This song is called 秋的懷念。"Reminisce of the Autumn"

  • Wonderful!

'my parents had this 78 disc. I last heard it 48 years ago. I LOVED it.

  • No problem, actually found the piece intriguing. Googled her and found her on wikipedia. Yes, romanised chinese names can be written differently depending on the dialect.
