In 1817 Isaac Callahan was hanged because of a murder he committed during a feud in Clay County,Kentucky. From the scaffold, he played one last song, and asked if anyone could play it. No one could so he smashed the fiddle and was hung. The tune became known as Callahan or Last of Callahan. I don't know if the story is true, but Isaac Callahan was a real person. He was my ggggg grandmothers brother. Jess Wilson wrote of that hanging in his book "When They Hanged the Fiddler. "

I can remember my grandpa playing this tune on the banjo. He told an interesting story about the tune. Dad says grandpa played it it "G" and went up high on the first string.

Hi John, I'm curious about the story. I've never heard it played in G but I'll bet it sounded great.
