Ottawa Tourism staff rap about Rideau Canal Skateway

At their 2009 Christmas party, some staff of Ottawa Tourism participated in a contest to create the best rap song about the Rideau Canal Skateway.

The Rideau Canal Skateway is the world's largest naturally frozen skating rink, according to Guinness World Records. It stretches 7.8 km (4.8 miles) through downtown Ottawa, and is maintained by the National Capital Commission. It's equivalent in size to 90 Olympic-sized ice skating rinks. www.canadascapital.gc.ca/skateway

Skating on the Rideau Canal is a centrepiece of Winterlude, a fun winter festival held over the first three weekends of February each year (Feb. 5-21, 2010). www.winterlude.gc.ca

The full Rideau Canal is Ontario's first UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of 15 across Canada. The Canal runs 202 km (126 miles) south to Kingston and Lake Ontario and was built between 1826 and 1832 by Lt. Col. John By of the Royal Engineers and a dedicated bunch of mostly Irish, Scottish and French Canadian workers. www.rideauheritageroute.ca
