"Technology is the knack of so arranging the world that we don't have to experience it." -- Max Frisch
In this day and age, many of us are overwhelmed with everyday activities. Be it school, relationships, work, etc., balancing and making everything "work" potentially poses a detrimental challenge to the way we live. Thankfully, new technologies allow us to manage these things into one hand held device: the smart phone. These portable handheld devices possess an infinite capability designed to deal with the trials and tribulations of constant information overload posed in everyday life. In essence, they make it possible to manage work, school, social life, individual entertainment, etc. in our society today.
However, such technologies that are supposedly meant to connect us to the world actually create an impermeable barrier -- we interact with our environment through an interface rather than first hand experiences. This interface, be it the smart phone, computer or other similar devices, is the root of our disconnection to our surroundings, the people around us and to ourselves.
Nowadays, what it means to "experience" has changed. Although we are capable to navigate through different spaces with just a click of a button, we are unable to immerse ourselves in these discrete environments without being "fully" there.
Very Brief Overview:
We chose stop motion as our preferred medium due to its capability to allow the subject to navigate freely through different spaces (and as opposed to traditional film, it plays with discrete data as oppose to continuous -- which is something we wanted to explore). The protagonist in the video is constantly moving from one spot to another but is unable to enjoy his time in the many different environments because he is constantly overloaded with a throng of information that continually controls his actions. By the end of the video, he becomes the prisoner to not only information, but also the very technology that is created to help him.
