Edit: Wow, 6000 views! Thanks everyone!

Showing a PS2 running its own version of linux, the tutorial i was speaking of can be found at : http://kernelloader.sourceforge.net/tutorial/howtoinstalllinux.html If you are really interested in doing this, then thats the way to go. As said in the video, Slim PS2's have an issue with their USB slots being weird and corrupting things so its best for a fat PS2. Its proof of concept, hey it works, it was something to do while Drinking coffee and had nothing better to do. It took 3 days of 1 hour attempts till figuring out how to do it, The actual install took around 30 minutes itself, then resulted in what you see. This Distro was special made by *edit* "adeba5er", who made it with "Mega Man", together they made it possible for linux to run on the PS2 again.

  • if i run an emulator on linux i can run win 7! but how would i duel boot emulator and ps2 operating system?

  • @kieracker You can not replace the RAM in a PS2, it is soldered onto the motherboard, You can not take it out and replace it. =o As for Windows 7 ... If you want to try it go ahead, but I'm trying to tell you that 32mb of actual system memory, is not enough for Win7, let alone to emulate it. I just don't see it doable. Go do the research of how much RAM Win7 requires, then find out how much a PS2 has. Windows 3.11 Could be done, windows 7 not so much.

  • PS2 has 64MB of available memory. You can add swap space to increase memory (same like pagefile), and that is 512MB big which will allow you to run some apps that rely on memory. Since EE is PPC based, you can port some apps easily.

  • @xan1242 Nice! PS2's have 32MB of RDRAM and then 4MB of eDRAM ((Playstaion 2 Wiki)) Swap space does give you more room to work with though. I would love to see some programs ported to the PS2, Like usable ones, or even a newer youtube app.

  • @TailsFurse Yeah, I would love to see that too, but well, nobody is working on it lately. :/

I also saw Wine ported to this distro! Some guy who showed off Firefox running in Blackrhino in Wine, and I wonder how the hell he did that.

And someone ported Bochs to PS2 as well, and I actually tried installing Windows 2000, and it took 2 days to copy the files on the PS2 with a USB stick. After that it didn't boot. xD (that's why I recommend making a VM on PC and then run on PS2)

  • @xan1242 Wow man, kudos to you for giving the PS2 time to try. Waiting 2 days for a distro install, you my friend have patience! xD

  • This is a distro I built based on the original BlackRhino release. I spent alot of time tweaking and compiling various applications. Mega Man (kernelloader) did all of the heavy lifting, run time and kernel work, even built a LiveDVD. More info is available on the forums - psx-scene[dot]com -- forums -- ps2-homebrew-dev-emu-scene

The last release of my distro was March 2010 at the 4shared site mentioned in the forums.

  • Lol, I love the way you say it almost looks like a real computer, xterm is /bin/bash and no that is not MSDOS. Try some commands like; ls, pwd, who, uname -a, lspci... Linux is more of a real operating system than MSWindows!

  • @TailsFurse But enough for Windows XP :D

  • @TailsFurse It was a virtual machine emulating x86 processor, and it was as slow as shit! Windows 98 works, though. I also tried mounting my Dosbox Windows 98 image in the dosbox in this distro and Dosbox crashed

I killed time with my PS1 and PC, and my PC is capable enough of playing PS2 games, so if I ever want to play a PS2 game while my PS2 is busy, I still have emulator. It was worth a shot, to see how long it will install. Also, if I left it on for even longer, it might boot.

  • but surely u can replace the ram?

  • Holy shit, I have same setup! xD

Except I run it directly off 16GB USB, because I don't have Network Adapter, even though I want one badly.
