How to change a Volkswagen Generator belt in about 5 seconds. I was shown this trick a few years back, by Reece Kelso. Kelso was the "VW" man around the Gaston County N.C. area in the 70's. Kelso is gone but the memory is still strong. Here is my go at it ENJOY.

you're not reading my original comment, I know this is the fan belt, I was reacting to people who were talking about doing this with cam belts.

You can't do this with cambelts (not even talking about covers and stuff) unless you have a free running engine, if not, everything crashes into eachother (pistons and valves) but even if you have a free running engine, it won't work properly, the timings are important, and there is almost zero chance of getting it right

what are you talking about, its the fan belt (or auxillary) hes changing,. not the CAM belt, nothing to do with timing.

the only think that happens here is the battery stops charging whilst the belt is off.

It matter not a jot if its an interference engine, take a cam belt off, the engine WILL stop, besides which (and im not a VW experts) AFAIK the VW air cooled engine doesn't have a cam belt, or a timing chain its gear driven

Cam belts are nearly always under a cover on a road car too.
