  • sounds like you need your hearing checked. I've heard plenty of dying cats and they sound much louder and more unpleasant than this bird.

  • c\is it legal to own one as a pet

  • I have nursed them for a few weeks when the parents have abandoned them, or when they have been injured by a car hit. But they are protected wildlife and therefore not legally kept as pets.

  • they are like the smartest bird. i seen footage of one pick up a nut, fly over a road, drop the nut on the road. wait for a car to run over it, then go to pick up the open nut and eat it.

  • I can smell the gum trees just watching him! :)

  • Im glad I dont know you!

  • I don't quite know how I'd start my day without that beautiful warble.

  • DUBSTEP!!!

  • I wish the Norwegian magpie (Pica pica) could sing like that.

I swear on my heart that is the most annoying sound on earth!

  • @Kahsajara - I thought that was crows or ravens that worked that one out.

  • One of my most cherished simple pleasures, is to be woken by a chorus of native Australian birds

  • They have an amazing vocal range, almost like they are actually "talking". Curious birds. If you copy them, they will come for a closer look and start to sing to you.

  • @roflcopterIII Australian Magpies aren't the same Magpies as the ones in Europe, Asia, or North America, though. They're more related to other Australian birds like butcherbirds and currawongs. It's kind of like how the American Robin isn't related to the European Robin.

Aussie Magpies are in the family "Artamidae" instead of "Corvidae." Although, those families are often grouped together in a "superfamily" ...

Hi Thanks for the great clip i used it to comfort an abandoned and later rescue Maggie nestling i found at the side of the road.

  • I miss that song, I used to hear it almost every day as a kid but it's rare now due to development, and when tthe birds do manage to find a nesting place they get shot because of the potential hazard to people getting swooped. Which sounds like a load of crap to me, I've never heard of anyone being blinded or killed by a magpie. But, throw in the words 'potential' and 'lawsuit', and Councils immediately look at 'eradication of threat'. Bring back the magpie!
