This is Uday Deshpande from Pune, India, playing the traditional "tabla" drums. The left hand plays the bass on the wider drum called the "dugga" and the right hand plays the lead drums on the "tabla". Together, the drums are also called "tabla". The skin consists of concentric circles that produce different notes, thus enabling the player to create melodic percussion. Tabla players often use compound time signatures; sometimes as difficult as "36 and a quarter". They accomplish this by internalizing the complex meters until they are able to play them instinctively with total accuracy.
