hip hop fans should recognize the very beginning of this song as one of the many samples in Gang Starr's 1989 debut single "Words I Manifest." this track is simply amazing. everything from Dizzie's amazing trumpet playing to the infectious sound of the vibes that are sprinkled throughout the track. Dizzie Gillespie is famous for being one of the founders of Bebop, modern (along with Charlie Parker) and Cuban influenced Jazz. he died in January of 1993 but left his legacy behind. the pictures on this video show his face looking like that of a blowfish. his face looked like this because he never had any formal instruction on playing the trumpet but learned to play it anyways which damaged his face. you may recognize the style of trumpet he is playing; horn pointing upward. this was his signature and he was the very first to do this. he is also considered by many the first ever beat nick. enjoy.

  • correct me if im wrong, but words i manifest was a James Brown sample?

  • @returninginsurgent the main melody is from a different version of this song. the James Brown sample was used for the drums and the secondary melody as well as a few random James Brown voice samples from the song "Bring It Up (Hipster's Avenue)".

  • @eboyd32 thanks....that's what I thought. The bassline from this song (really the charlie parker version) along with the horns and hollar from "Bring it"...nice. I coulda swore that this melody was the JB song, just filtered for the bassline. You know what.....there are two versions of Words I manifest...one may NOT have this melody.

  • @returninginsurgent all versions i can find have the melody from the Charlie Parker version of this. a few may be in better or worse quality but that's it, though the wikipedia page entry for "No More Mr. Nice Guy" lists "Manifest" as well as a remix and, if i recall correctly, states that the remix is the version that was popularized. i do not own NMMNG, however, and therefore have not seen whether or not there was a remix or if it was just a wikipedia page error.

  • if you're being precise about it gang starr sampled charlie parkers version

  • @danthedonHBB did they really? i was wondering because it sounded a bit different. thanks!

  • I used to listen to this a lot a year or so ago on summer nights laying around in my bed

reading short stories of different authors. I started listening to this song again, and I got really

sad remembering those small memories. Then I felt really sad and scared for some reason

because I couldn't never feel like how I did them and do the same things like that. But I still

love this song, its no longer just a song, its a piece of my memory.

  • Chaka Khan did a nice version of this in the 80s!
