I didnt say the double turn was required. A turn was required and she chose to put a double turn in the routine, and she had a break on it. The judges knew what she had planned obviously, so they knew that required element had breaks in it. Notice I didnt say required DOUBLE turn in my post.
@metsdudenj I am curious as to how you know that a double turn was required in a floor routine in 1981. Only a simple full routine was required in later quads. I think you're making up requirements that weren't actually there.
She was also out difficultied by Zoya Grantcharova; who had 2 double backs and a triple twist; that routine got 9.85. Considering that and Rodica's two errors in the routine on a required turn, the score is appropriate.
There were two deductions in her routine. If you compare the two routines from AA and this one, you will see that after her first run, she goes for a double turn that comes up short by a half turn. In addition, she does a catch foot extension which slips out of her hand and she goes forward towards the floor. Although covered up well, it was a deviation from the routine the judges were aware of and hence the lower score.
The Romanians were not at their best at the 1981 Worlds but they were completely ravaged by the judging.
Rodica's routine deserved at least a 9.90. The piked double back was explosive and impeccable. The tumbling was difficult and solid. Her dance was captivating. It was a great FX.
In the AA she got a 9.85 for her FX and this performance in the finals was better.
That double pike really was hit right on.

That's still pretty picky, when girls with major balance errors on beam were still being awarded 9.9's.
