Handfilled boilers must never be filled over the high water mark. Rust floats on the surface of the water and is discharged with the steam if the boiler is overfilled.Never leave the boiler empty. Water and oxygen forms rust. An "empty" boiler always has a little water left in the bottom and will rust quickly due to the exposure to oxygen.
