Lesson content below.
How to count from 100 to 100,000,000 in cantonese.

Shortcuts for saying 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, and 90.
Instead of saying yi sap for 20, we can say yaa. So 21 = yaa yat, 22 = yaa yi, 23 = yaa saam, ..... 29 = yaa gau

Instead of saying saam sap for 30, we can say saa a. So 31 = saa a yat, 32 = saa a yi, 33 = saa a saam, ..... 39 = saa a gau

The remaining 40 - 90 is easy since they have regular patterns. Just say first digit followed by a.
So 40 = sei a, 50 = m a, 60 = luk a (don't connect the k and a sounds as one would in English; don't say lu - ka; the k is still muted), 70 = tsat a (don't say tsa - ta), 80 = baat a (don't say baa - ta), 90 = gau a

Remember only use these shortcuts when there's a word directly after the shortcut. To say 20 by itself, don't use the shortcut...instead say yi sap.

Big numbers:
100 - baak - 百
1,000 - tsin - 千
10,000 - maan - 萬
100,000,000 - yik - 億

I'm gonna go over the places that western counting system is based.
1 = yat
10 = sap
100 = baak
1,000 = tsin
10,000 = man
100,000 = sap man (10 x 10,000)
1,000,000 = baak man (100 x 10,000)
10,000,000 = tsin man (1,000 x 10,000)
100,000,000 = yik
1,000,000.000 = sap yik (10 x 100,000,000)
10,000,000.000 = baak yki (100 x 100,000,000)
100,000,000,000 = tsin yik (1,000 x 100,000,000)

Once you get used to this way of counting, it shouldn't be too hard.

Good luck.

  • Hi Viper? Are you in Hong Kong? I am an Australian in Hong Kong trying to learn Cantonese and your English is obviously very good and you seem like a very good teacher? Any chance of being a tutor?? It would however be for the love of it as my wife earns the money and its hard to get it off her..!! thanks, Daniel

  • @beardan76 I'm in Japan....good luck

  • from 38 seconds to 52 he is saying sup to his children

  • @twinklypoop good one. haha. I have 9 kids all sequentially named after the one's digit.

  • This is really dumb, but my boyfriend is Jewish and I'm Hispanic Catholic and so this was really helpful. But ain't nobody learning Cantoneze from this shytt

  • @LeCortegeFunebre What are you trying to say? First, you said it was dumb and then really helpful and then followed by useless. How many ways can your contradict yourself? LOL. Anyway, other people are learning how to count in Cantonese from this. Other than being mentally inferior to other viewers, I don't see how you can't learn to count from this. Thanks for watching, anyway.
