My arrangement of a song written by Randy Newman for the classic movie, "Toy Story".

To me this is one of the most gospel of non-gospel songs that articulates the mystery of "Emmanuel God with us", Jesus the friend of sinners. In the chorus it says,

"some other folks might be a little bit smarter than I am, bigger and stronger too"

I'm reminded how scripture makes clear Jesus, in His humanity, was not the most handsome, talented, accomplished or smartest. Nothing greatly distinguished Him until He began His ministry. The verse that says,

"You got troubles boy, I got'em too"

reminds me that He was in all ways tempted like as we are and yet without sin. Of course, that only applies to His time here on earth for now He has no temptations or troubles. The mystery of God becoming man is beyond full comprehension.

Jesus said in John 15:15 I have not called you servants for the servant knows not what his lord is doing, but I have called you friends, for all things I have heard of my Father, I have made known unto you.

On a simpler note, I would rather have friendship without romance than romance without friendship any day. Friendships by their very nature defer to relationships of greater priority in their own or their friends' lives.

  • Thanks, Ida! Please excuse me for taking so long. I have a backlogue as long as.....well, very long! I am exploring some possibilities for making timely and well illustrated video tutorials for my arrangements. Being a tad technically challenged is an obstacle, but will be overcome....eventually. Thanks for your patience. Shalom!

  • This is a sweet, smooth and fun song...so well played, what rhythm, base lines, and great vocals -- spiritual and bluesy. I may have asked you a few months back regarding a phil keaggy song, might you have any instruction on how to play this? Maybe some tab or regular score? Thanks for sharing!
