In the wake of the Olympics, the benefits of Beijing's rapid economic development is not being felt by many of the capital's residents. Al Jazeera's Melissa Chan reports.

Yeah China is not exactly a great country for reporting the truth. Actually I thought part of China's duty was to allow greater freedom of expression and media access as part of hosting the Olympics. In fact nothing really has, reporters still encounter resistance by China's police, and they are now cracking down on Video Hosting sites. Just goes to show the Olympics dont put their money where their mouth is.

I happen to reside in Beijing right now and for the following five months to come. I have visited the Olympic stadiums in build-up just last week and spent enough time already in the hutongs to be able to say you can paint the picture just how you want. If you're out to find progress, there plenty to find, if you're out to report poverty, that shouldn't be a problem also. The way the media more often pulls the latter's card is rather distressing.
