If you go to the gapminder website, you can run this video. The country that falls apart at 1:44 is Rwanda, Africa. This corresponds with the massive genocide that occurred in the 1990s.

Most likely Liberia. 1989 was the start of the Liberian civil war that was one of Africa's bloodiest.
