For the first time, Gapminder can now visualize change in life expectancy and income per person over the last two centuries. In this Gapminder video, Hans Rosling shows you how all the countries of the world have developed since 1809 - 200 years ago.

An insightful forewarning there. However I do not think that the laws of physics apply to computer generated graphs.

I dont get how life expectancy in China can have a 30 year decrease in a few years of great leap forward and can catch back up again in a few years, does it mean Chinese people aged 30 and above all died during that time and resurrected a few years later? This does not make sense.

I would guess that if a graph was made representing enviromental health measures such as arable land, forested areas, biodiversity and water quality, those measures would be going in the opposite direction. What isn't demonstrated by this graph is that these significant short term gains have come at the significant long term cost of our environmental health, which will make it increasingly difficult to sustain this direction of improvement in the future if we keep going along this path.
