Joan Borysenko on: The Dark Night of the Soul

St. John of the Cross and St. Teresa of Avila in the 15th Century
described the "dark night of the soul" and how it's a place of grace.
Joan explores that concept in this segment and identifies pitfalls. She
says the darkness of 'don't know' is frightening to most people, but it
stops the ego in its tracks and something new has to happen.

Psychologist and medical scientist, Joan Borysenko, PhD explores transformation through her healing experience. She is the co-founder of the Mind/Body clinical programs at Boston's Beth Israel/Deaconess Medical Center and taught at Harvard Medical School. This interview was conducted at IONS as part of the transformation project research in 2006.

  • If one enters the Dark Night of the Soul and doesn't become Catholic, then one is doomed.

  • I respect your position however, I do not ascribe to this kind of thinking. The condition of being "doomed" is dependent upon the BELIEF that it's actually possible.

  • This woman is right on. I am in this place and what she said is exactly what I am experiencing. One thing, it is so depressing but through the depression you have an overwhelming feeling that your life will never be the same again.

  • 3:31 "Patience, one needs along this journey..."

  • "... a desire for somebody who knows the answers ... " Interesting. Well put. Thank you for making this available and sharing with us. Thought provoking, to be sure.
