Undoubtedly one of the most popular folk songs ever recorded, "Puff The Magic Dragon" has unfortunately been the victim of a long-standing rumor that has the lyrics referring to the use of marijuana. Its authors, Leonard Lipton and Peter Yarrow, have vociferously denied the rumor for years, and yet it still persists. The lyrics were written by Leonard Lipton in 1959, a Cornell University student who was inspired by an Ogden Nash poem entitled "Custard, The Dragon". The song itself peaked at #2 on the pop charts during late March of 1963.

  • My oldest grandchild turned 34 today. I use to sing this to him when he was very small. He thought Puff lived under my bathtub because the drain made funny noises. I can still see the amazed look on his little face the first time he heard it. I miss that little guy, but love the man he's grown to be.

  • this song is so wonderful. <3 ; __ ; nostalgiaa

  • Thank you for this.Puff is about the Goodbye to childhood imagination. It is not meaningless.Well done to those who sang this to their children and grandchildren.X

  • IT IS MEANINGLESS IN A WAY , BUT I STILL HAVE THE PP&M VINYL PUFF THE MAGIG DRAGON CAME OUT ON IN THE ORIGINAL ALBUM. STILL BRINGS GOOD FEELINGS WHEN I PLAY IT EACH TIME .

  • @midnightmagicable WHAT COLOR DO YOU THINK PUFF WAS , IF YOU THINK YOU KNOW SO MUCH ! LOOK INTO THE SONG AND LISTEN !

  • @Ninja6977 if you do a google search for 'custard the dragon by ogden nash' the poem comes up. after reading it, i could see where leonard lipton got his inspiration for this song.

  • This song is all about cannabis, it's not a child's song. Who does everyone think Little Jackie Paper was?

  • I would have liked to have read the poem that it was made from but that got lost to bad cause I read that the poem had more to it.

  • This song is a very poignant expression of the transition from child to adult. Simply that. Told in the second person. Very clever. Very sad.

  • I don't care if this song is about marijuana or not; it's a great classic regardless, and one of the few songs I first listened to as a preschooler that's still one of my favorites today.

  • This is a touching and sweet song. It's really soothing and I feel really bad for the Magic Dragon. I have been listening to it since I was six years old. It makes me think of my childhood memories and how precious they are, how innocent and naive I was. Enjoy this song!

  • Did you know the dragon you put in there was from Pete's dragon and has nothing to do with puff. Two totally different stories, just saying
