Activity Title: Same word -- different meaning
Skills used: Speaking (Explaining words)
Materials: word strips
Preparations:
• Copy and cut out 24 words cards
Directions:
• Make groups of 4 students.
• Each group divides itself into two further teams -- A and B.
• Give each team a pile of word cards and place them face down on the desk.
• Team A starts. One student turns over the top card.
• The card is visible to everyone and the team tries to give two different meanings for the word.
To verify the meaning of the word, they can either define the word or make a sentence using that word.
If both teams don't' explain the meaning of the word, they are allowed to refer to a dictionary at the end of the game, with no extra points awarded.
•Team B listens and either accepts or rejects team A's answer
They may use "Challenge." when both teams disagree on the meaning of a word. But the team who calls "Challenge" may lose points if they don't suggest correct answer.
• If successful, Team A retains the card.
• If unsuccessful, Team A can ask the teacher for their judgment.
• If the teacher rejects, it is replaced to the bottom of the pile.
• Play proceeds in this manner, with the teams taking it in turns to explain the words.
• The team with the largest number of cards at the end is the winner.
• At the end of the game, find out from the whole class if there were any words that caused problems.
Considerations:
• Words can vary depending on the level of students.
• If students are high-level, they can make up two sentences to show the different meanings.
• time limit for 30 seconds
• We can prepare two or more sets of cards having different points, according to the difficulty of words.
... All vernaculars can be absolutely defined by noting that an eight-facet polygon, symbolizing the eight faces of Man (2 genders and 4 genres - white, black, brown, and yellow), was the rigid mold around which the human species was designed and created, and that this symbol contains ALL abstract human concepts!
