There used to be a time, about a hundred years ago, when brown bears could be found throughout Europe, even as far as in Scotland. Nowadays their habitat is mostly confined to the sloping forests of Central Europe. The brown bear is Europes largest land predator.
They eat both plants and meat and are fond of berries and fruit.
An adult male weighs nearly 300 kilos. The female is usually smaller. Bears often reach an age of 25-30. They are solitary wanderers, that can travel hundreds of miles through an area alone. Males and females are together only during the mating season.
