I hate to sound like a douche, but I think that Eko was just created as the worst stereotypes of a black guy.
Think about it. He wears tattered cloths, he carries a big stick around, He steals, he kills, he's a drug dealer, and he's constantly angry. (granted so is Sawyer with that last one, but I digress)

youre not a douche! But the character is much more complex. He was a drug dealer who passed himself off as a priest to smuggle drugs. After crashing on the island. He found redemption and learned that he actually did have faith.

I agree that he's a bit of a stereotyped African, but I don't think he was always angry. The stick was Adwale's idea (he says so in the video). That sort of changes things.
