Theory only improves playing, and his playing is a million times better now.

@MartyFriedmanRulez66 awh i misinterperted your comment man.and yeah some of his playing is pretty awesome from back then..but i still beleive now his playing has become more robotic..structured and not as..liquid and flowing.whcih from what ive seen in many guys i know is as a result of too "much" theory..yano? im only 17anyways man so im not that much more expeinced in life haha

@xxxEnterSandmanXxX I didn't say his playing improved over time I'm saying his solos were awesome even before he knew a lot of theory, what I took from your comment (which might be misunderstood because I'm 15) is that you think he is mechanical and is more theory oriented then actually musical. I was trying to convince you other wise saying "hey he was badass before he knew any theory"

@MartyFriedmanRulez66 why do you automaticaly think thats due to theory? everyones playing improves over time..we pick things up through videos ,gigs and practice..im not convinced dude sorry
-
@xxxEnterSandmanXxX He started out knowing virtually no theory check out Testament back in the day (still awesome now but old Testament is pre theory days) then rethink your comment

Just Melodic Minor. Major scale with a b3. Basic stuff

in my opinion this guy has gone overboard with the theory..dont get me wrong its vital to have theory but some players just wrap themselves up in all of it and forget that the guitar is an instrument thus appealing to ones ears.

@HurricaneTBag Alex is far more than a jazz player. Alex has been essential in Testament's sound and is just a much a metal player as he is a jazz player. Ive never heard a Mick solo I have been impressed with. Unless Mick doesnt play to his potential in Slipknot, I cant say he has amazing leads. Alex is still a better metal player on top of his jazz and classical chops.

Sounds like Jazz to me. Which is not at all a bad thing..

@Theenragedone I know Mick and have played with him, while I'd never compare him to Alex Skolnick (may as well compare Paco De Lucia to Michael Romeo) he is a downright filthy player. Amazing skill, sickeningly tight rhythm chops, tremendous lead skill, and a surprising amount of theory knowledge. Different style than Alex, is a jazzy guitarist whereas Mick is full out metal. A lil classical in his playing, but he's a straight up metal guitarist. Why would you ever compare him to a jazz guy?
betcha can't understand the theory behind this... lol.

Years ago I took lessons from Skolnick in NYC for several months. He was a very brilliant and positive teacher that got me to understand concepts that I NEVER would have understood on my own. And he did it in such a short time that I felt I had taken a huge leap in my playing and understanding of the guitar. Money got tight and I had to stop going,But I will always be grateful for my time learning from a true master.
