"Lexikon-Sonate" (1993-2007) for computer-controlled piano performed by composer Karlheinz Essl at his portrait comncert (Porgy & Bess, Vienna 2005). Video: Bruno Vaplon.
With his left hand on a MIDI controller, Essl controls the intensity of the various structure generators of the Lexikon-Sonate which generate music on the fly, using compositional algorithms that Essl is developing since the 1985 and which are implemented in Max/MSP.
The right hand (hitting on the computer keyboard) can evoke musical figures such as single notes, chords, arpeggios, glissandi, and trills. Furthermore, it also controls the global dynamics and the sustain pedal.
There is a free version of the computer program that runs on any Apple Macintosh computer.
