California Nurses Protest Blue Shield Rate Hikes

The California Nurses Association and other supporters of Medicare-for-All unite to protest Blue Shield's proposed 59% rate hikes. The pressure RNs and others put on Blue Shield resulted in Blue Shield's announcement that they will delay the rate increases. But nurses say, now or later, rate hikes are unacceptable.

Many Americans are suffering under insurance company rate hikes. The California Nurses Association supports Medicare-for-All to protect all americans from catastrophic illness and bankruptcy.

Among the speakers is Kerry Abukhalaf, who is making the difficult decision to insure only her young son instead of her entire family because Blue Shield costs are prohibitive. She joins thousands of americans in similar circumstances.

Also present, Cynthia Campbell, who was saved by the U.S.'s only form of public healthcare, Veterans Administration (VA) benefits. A cancer survivor, Cynthia was bumped from Blue Shield insurance because of her illness and was able to survive only because her husband has VA coverage.

As patient advocates, nurses oppose this ongoing tragedy. President Obama's health reform requires everyone to pay for insurance, but insurance corporations set the rates, and they are prohibitively expensive.
