I had a few minutes left at the end of my Digital8 camcorder tape, so I decided to use it up while playing a rather nice song from a generic "Jazz Combo" CD bought at a dollar store. Most of the tracks are rather boring and repetitive, but this one stands out with a catchy riff and high quality musicianship, especially from the drummer. I wish I could credit the composer and performers, but the CD is just labelled "DigiMusic Essentials Collection," by "DigiView Entertainment" of Dunellen, New Jersey. Unfortunately the tape ran out before the song ended, but it gets a little repetitive near the end anyway.

I also used analog S-Video capture to transfer this footage into my computer, so you can see some of the Sony camcorder's neat information displays, including a real-time tally of the camera's adjustments as it was recording the video, including auto or manual exposure, shutter speed (usually 1/100, 1/90, or 1/60, automatically adjusted), white balance mode (always automatic on this model), aperture (usually F1.4 in indoor lighting), and video gain (which maxes out at 18 dB).

  • which camcorder do you use, and can you plug the cd str8 into the cam to get such good sound?

  • It is a Sony Digital8 camcorder from 1999, model DCR-TRV103. You need to use an attenuator (or "T-pad") to record a line level audio source through its microphone jack, or else it will overdrive the input.

  • What dollar store did you get this CD from?

  • I forgot the name, but it's next to the Wal-Mart in South Plainfield, NJ. It's not part of a chain.

  • Oh, I see that the sony cd player is from 1985. Nice video.

  • That's a nice early Sony CD player. About what year is is from?

  • wow very clean sound and love your equipment

  • I have a 95 or 96 Sony DCR-PC7E Which CCD already broke and battery alredy dead but It still can play miniDV tape just fine

  • Those cameras are just too big for me, plus any cheap ones you can find are likely to have problems due to bad capacitors. Plus, there is a tradeoff: one large CCD gives you better low light sensitivity, while three smaller CCDs give you better resolution.

  • Hi Kevin, have you ever considered getting a cheap 3CCD pro camcorder like a Sony CCD VX3 or a JVC GY-X3?
