  • @AerithOnBroadway sumi jo mastered when she was 18

  • @REBECCAtheSOPRANO mozart wrote the role for a dramatic coloratura

  • @3F93 dramatic means that they have a heavier quality in their voice that is why they are called lyric dramatic coloraturas then you have light lyric coloraturas which she definitely is not. I am a coloratura and my voice is definitely not heavy like hers and I am a light lyric to be precise

  • Not so dramatic, very weak, light voice, ive heard so many better queens

  • @adia216 I meant to write 'heavier', not 'heavy', sorry. I meant Damrau has a heavier voice than Jo. Jo is a leggero, the canary-type soprano with little, light and agile voice that is comfortable with the highest notes; Damrau is a lyric-coloratura, she still has a lot of agility and can reach the high notes, but has a bit warmer and louder voice, The only dramatic-coloratura soprano that sang this role and I can think of is Edda Moser. Sutherland as well, but in Eb, a whole tone lower.

  • @3F93 not sure how Damrau is lyric and "heavy". I've never seen her live, so I don't judge. Just know she was doing Lucia at the Met, so going towards the heavier with her.

Totally agree on the tuning, which is why we have so many "period" orchestras now performing these types of operas. Also have issues with voices being pressed so hard to be bigger than they really are and losing the ability to move or drop the weight on top. Back in the day, same soprano would sing this and Aida at a house.

  • @REBECCAtheSOPRANO 1st:. re-read. I didn't say a dramatic soprano. I said a dramatic coloratura. 2nd: i use the term loosely, because that's what we have. I'm not one of those "omg, you have to stay in your fach" people. I believe that the voice should do what it can deliver solidly. Sumi Jo doesn't do that for this role. Maybe she can do it in something like Hoffmann, or Entfuhrung, but this is not for her.

so many other factors inc. new tuning, etc. would be happy to discuss with you =)

  • @adia216 What are you talking about? If you want to get technical about fach and style, a dramatic soprano should NEVER sing this. Mozart music is not big music. It is refined, not big. Sumi sounds amazing as the Queen and does a great job delivering the music with the correct Mozart style. Just cause she's not yelling it doesn't mean she's wrong.

Yes, it's exciting to hear big voices do this aria, but it should never be reserved for them.

  • Finally, a perfect "Zertrümmert" ;-)
