Dedede was never an enemy the reason he took the star rod was so that the nightmare couldn't control the dreams of everyone in dreamland that is why after Kirby beat him ad he had teh star rod and was trying to put it back in the fountain of dreams he tried to tell him not to do it. but Kirby didn't listen so he put the rod back. as soon as he did the nightmare escaped.
