Definately one of my favorite areas on Long Island. In this video I show you the Dwarf Pines south of Sunrise Highway (NY 27). The shapes here often have classic flat tops but are short, usually 4-10ft in height. These trees are just as old as the ones you'll see in places like Connetquot, but they grow stunted due to the very arid conditions found here. The Pine Plains are globally rare, meaning that they only occur here and in Southern NJ, with a small outcrop in the 'Gunks in upstate NY. This is also one of the "pineyest" areas on LI, with nothing but pines as far as the eye can see.
Later on in the hike I revisit Old Westhampton Road which leads up to Sarnoff Preserve in Riverhead. Unfortunately some pesky Cirrus clouds start invading from the south toward the end of the hike.
