Alexis Arguello dies in Nicaragua

Legendary three-time former world champion Alexis Arguello, 57, died today from what has been reported as a self-inflicted gunshot wound at his residence in Managua, Nicaragua. Arguello had taken on the job of Mayor of Managua in January of 2009 representing the majority pro-government Sandinista Front of National Liberation (FSLN). Up to now authorities have not officially announced the cause of death. Arguello was one of the greatest fighters in history, compiling a record of 82-8 with 65 knockouts.

I met the champ twice and the second time he remembered me from three years previous. A kind, humble man he was proud of the fact that he lived in Canada for 2 yrs. working in tobacco fields in Ontario. The first time we met, when he found out I was Canadian he threw off his jacket and shirt to show us a tattoo of a Canadian Flag on his arm!! One of THE all-time greats!! Suicide my ass

Does anybody really believe he killed himself? Just like Gatti, everyone close to those two all say the same thing that noway either one of them who kill themselves. I don't know all the details about Alexis death but from what I've heard so far it seemed like a hit.

i find it very hard to believe that alexis arguello killed himself. he always seemd to have that big smile on his face and always a true gentleman. although he was a great champion and great guy, i'm sure there were a lot of sick people that wanted him dead because of his political beliefs. its a shame that his death was ruled a suicide!
