One missing aspect of the film that I also think adds to your argument is the obvious homosexual relationship implied between Eliot and his friends. This relationship must be sacrificed to be accepted into the family, a potential symbol of how homosexuality is deemed incompatible with the traditional Republican concept of family ideals.

Try to drink every time there's something green on the screen. I'm pretty sure you won't be able to stop drinking the whole movie.
