This is the mating together of my Vintage Hofner 457/se 2 Archtop semi with humbuckers with a Pignose G40V all valve amp.

Based on the Bassman 5F6 circuit and Same Tube configuration to the Tweed Bassman ~ 3x12AX7 and 2x6L6 ~ it even has a 10" speaker albeit 1x10" BUT SAME 40 loud Watts, but tamed by the inclusion of a gain control so you can get breakup at comfortable levels. A further beauty of this highly portable little amp (only 24Lbs in weight!), is that it allows for either an 8 or 4 ohm output so you can drive a 4x12 easily.

These are such good amps for the money I fail to understand why so few have picked up on them ~ after all, Pignose has a rich history and many top bands and users have been thankful both live and in the studio for its famous 7-100 battery amp that is an incredible pre-amp option.

However, this does as good as a job as a driven Bassman, but at usable levels ~ trust me I KNOW!

No pedals, or editing - straight into meagre Canon Powershot A75 digicam and Windows Movie Maker.

  • I just got one of these off ebay for $115 SHIPPED! I have gigged with these amps before, I just pulled the chassis and mounted onto a rack shelf. They scream through a 4X12. This is one of the best designed medium watt amps that is usable at all volume/gain levels. Love it, and I have numerous vintage amps around. Keep gravitating to this one!

  • @tatsandteles - was it a used or new? I am just about to swap one of the 12AX7 for a 12AY7 as I don't need so much gain up the dial. I actually love the fact it sounded better than my 59Bassman, just as articulate but hotter at lower vols and so much easier to carry! But oh - still 40W LOUD!

  • awesome vid! any ideas on a cool cabinet to run with the g-40v?

  • Thanks.I have only used an external 1x12 which makes it more spacious and articulate. The standard 10" does keep it tighter on the Brown sound side ala 59Bassman. BUT a 4x12 with more gain set will be extremely loud and penetrating. This amp does mega loud for it's size!

  • I use mine often with a 1x12" Birch ply cabinet (as shown) with a 12" Celestion V30.

But if you like higher gain, you must try it through a 4x12 as it sounds enormous!

  • OOoh - that sounds nice...!

  • @snotmale It was used but looked brand new. Perfect amp for anything, and like you said-a simple tube swap makes big differences in gain. I love it.

  • yay more pignose videos! hopefully they'll stop making theses and they'll be rare and valueable in a few years, cause i have one hahaha.

  • Man, those Pignoses are something else!! Awsome!

  • Good range and contrast of tones... Nice!
