Bill Wirges and His Orch. - Let's Do It (Porter), Brunswick 1928

I have no idea who was Bill Wriges - author of this fantastic recoirding! One gets so easily lost among all those hundreds of pseudonyms of thousands of the hot dance orchestras of Roaring 1920s! Here, the name comes in my mind together with Harry Reser? (doesn't sound like him) Maybe Lanin? I believe, YT friends will help.

Added later: the ignorance of us makes us make mistakes even with the names of all those great musicians. So, I shamefully change Bill Wriges into Wirges!!! Sorry.. the great Ghost of Bill Wirges, please, excuse me!

  • Bill Wirges was the pianist for the Harry Reiser Band, and was recording director for Brunswick Records in the late 20's. I knew him when I was a young boy in the mid 1960's and he was in his 70's. he was a neighbor of ours, and he and my Dad became friends. I remember him as a kind old gentleman.

  • @genia106 ,DundaVetta.

  • @Victrolaman1 ,You were the GREATEST before your YT execution.

  • I used to use this 78 to test the tonal quality of Victors & Victrolas when I was collecting. I have to admit it made even the worst machines sound great, but listening to it on an Orthophonic was the piece de resistance. Listen to the last 3-4 seconds as the sticks wrap up the beat on the cymbals. SUPERB!

  • My 78's are in storage, but I could almost swear this is Leo Reisman & his Orch.

  • OMG!!! This is the first version of this AWSOME, AWSOME Song I ever got on a Brunswick 78 When I Was 16 years old!!! IT KNOCKED ME TO THE FLOOR!!! When I put it on My turntable!! BUT It was not the first version I heard, The First time I heard this song was by Rudy Valley! on the radieo. I Also have this WONDERFUL version on a Harmony 78 Record! as well as several other versions on Perfect, Victor, Supertone ect, ect, This is one of my all time favorite songs! Thank You For Posting.

  • The Orchestra is that of William F. Wirges. He existed A piano player/bandleader & recorded for US Brunswick. His recordings usually have no vocal, but when they do it is Al Jolson. Jolson's electric Brunswicks always use Wirges Orchestra w/Jolson. Also it is thought taht the band accompanying Jolson in the sound portions of the "Jazz Singer" (1927) is William Wirges' Orchestra. His band was pretty bland sounding, so it made Jolson

sound that much hotter. An old trick but a good one.

  • Where can I hear this version (Georgians)?

  • A fantastic piece of music, well played. Has anyone heard Victoria Wood's "interpretation" on YouTube? Very funny and well played.

  • Enjoyable slow tempo. One of my favorites.
