Sixteen years ago a Christmas celebration started on the Perkinston Campus of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College with a few cups of hot chocolate and a Christmas tree. That celebration, held on December 10 this year, was officially named the Festival of Lights 11 years ago. With more than 4,000 in attendance, it has become a tradition in South Mississippi, marking the beginning of the holiday season.
Sheree Bond, dean of Business Services on the Perkinston Campus and coordinator of the event, said, "Festival planning begins in July. It is a collaborative effort of many Perkinston Campus employees representing every department on campus. All those involved work very hard to make it a success."
Favorites at the event are a live nativity provided by Mary Price, Archie Batson and Big Level Baptist Church of Stone County; Santa and Mrs. Claus; and the Children's Parade. Bond said the event continues to grow as the attendance grows. "Special venues for the festival included carousel rides, an iceless skating, fine-arts performances provided by Perkinston Campus students and Stone High School and Stone Middle School students, and a Children's Village, to name a few. There is always plenty of fun for individuals of all ages."
A silent auction is held each year to help fund the event. Bond said there are also various event sponsors that ensure its success. "The event is made possible by sponsorships, including, but not limited to, the Stone County Economic Development Partnership and local businesses. The silent auction also provides 'seed money' for the event."
