- From the log of Calypso: May 12, 4:30 pm This is an historic moment. For the very first time, the finback whale is seen and filmed underwater in the open sea. The size and power that are frightening to behold from a small boat are an awe-inspiring sight underwater of enormity moving with grace. Propelled by admiration, a diver latches onto the whales dorsal fin for another first: a brief ride with a fellow ocean traveler. It is with a sense of envy that the divers watch the fin whale return alone to the deep.

  • And you mistranslated "rorqual". A rorqual is simply any member of the family Balaenopteridae, whereas the "finback whale" is a common name relegated to a certain species, Balaenoptera physalus.

  • That's actually a sei whale. Note the single median ridge, the dark right lower jaw, and tall, falcate dorsal fin. Fins have a white right lower jaw and a more backswept dorsal fin.

  • okay wtf?

  • So they see a fin whale and all they can think of doing is jumping in and harassing it with motorized vehicles and their touch . Who knows how long they would have been able to film this magnificent whale if they had done so quietly. What would Jacques Cousteau think of this crew?

  • So weird to see these Cousteau guys, even way back then, doing something endangering not only the whale, but themselves... unless that prop is made of soft plastic or rubber, nearly strikes the diver's foot.

  • these divers are harrasing this fin whale and now Iceland is going to kill a 150 of them this year 2009
