Americans think we say oot and aboot because we pronounce 'route' 'root' and not 'rout'. Route being a french word originally, we pronounce it closer to its original pronunciation rather than phonetically. however Canadians do not say oot and aboot.

A lot of Americans are wrong about a lot of things to do with Canada. It's classic American ignorance! We don't say "aboot" instead of "about" or "ruff" instead of "roof" (although I have heard plenty of Americans says that). I do use the word "eh" a lot though as do most other Canadians I know.
