Who are "We"? I know I'm part of the "We" you speek of. It doesn't really matter how popular Linux is, it's pretty much right where it needs to be. I have been a Linux user for a long time now, since about 1999. I never ever could stomach the bile that is called Windows. Hell I knew DOS was crap so why use something built on crap? My first computing experience was on UNIX. I mean if you prefer to be spoon fed, get Windows. If you like to think for yourself, get a Mac. I'm poor so LMDE is for me.
@tazdevilman1 I meant the high-performance vga drivers in particular.
Graphics drivers for me seldom/never work properly on any kernel version, (at least the nVidia and ATI ones. Intel used to do well, don't know about now.)
Besides, if they were meant to just work, why do break so often?
Even if we fix up the video subsystem, there needs to be some consistency in the audio department.
At least Linux Standard Base is going in the right direction.
@JustineBieberxoxo every kernel needs a new driver? I don't understand your comment here. Drivers aren't changed to accommodate the kernel nor do they need to be replaced when the kernel is updated. They do update drivers due to finding flaws, errors, or just something that makes the device work better but that is the same with any operating system. I may just be reading what you wrote wrong but that's what i get out of it.
This video is soooo outdated.. I think Linux has a valid chance of reaching mainstream as long as we look at people who actually care about the OS on their machine.
At my university there are more people using Linux as desktop / laptop than there is Windows / OS X users.
This is due to a lot of specific reasons like the ability to use AFS, Latex, Vector graphics (Inkscape, Dia, Xournal etc.), SVN, and so on..
Not long till Linux hits a highschool marketshare and then it'll boom :)
back when this video was made i would agree with him but now linux is far beyond ready its perfect the power it gives to the user cant be matched and the ease of setup and use is unmatched there are still the pro distros that not everyone can use but there is a home for everyong in linux and ones they get used to it they will be far happier
Linux has been ready for a long time... And really it doesn't matter what envoiorment you use.. If its linux you can install wich ever envoiroment you want on it.. I've never had a problem with Linux forums... So i have no idea what this guy is talking about...
I am watching this on a Linux distribution Lubuntu 11.4 on a 3 gig laptop and the pages are loading faster then the speed of light, screw windows screw apple, This cost me the price of a black dvd , this is awesome i have a dual boot with windows 7, but I use Linux as my main operating system, When i want to see a blue screen crash freezing and missing dll files and are you sure you want to continue messages I load up windows,
Windows needs a single stable standard API/ABI for graphics. PERIOD.
This will draw gamers, give it the air of high-performance, and draw the masses.
Too bad every kernel needs a new driver that may or may not work flawless and several kinds of frameworks for high-performance graphics. Mesa, DRI, what else we have?
