  • Wearing a Hijab is, in my view, a rediculous expression of the subjected position of women and frankly stupid. However, people have everyright to wear what the hell they want even if it makes a statement that I disagree with (nudity may be a different matter). It cannot be legislated against and Straw was not calling for it to be.

    If i support your right to choose to wear the hijab you must support my right to question, expression dismay and riducule that choice.

  • Let us say Salma Yaqoob truly believes in the spiritual or moral superiority of wearing a hijab. But my point was that she lives and works and speaks in an environment of choice and freedom. This freedom is precious and it does not exist in countries where Islam is the ruling religion. Islamic practices survive in a monopolistic environment and Islam believes in outlawing religious competition. R K Iyer
