Don't get your manties in a bunch, I'm not making a Twitter "rule", just trying to explain the logic behind why Twitter made a reply function in the first place. I'm http://www.Twitter.com/UnMarketing on twitter :)

  • Tweetdeck and other desktop & mobile clients don't have the context to replies and with the other limitations that the web client has, it's a necessary evil.

  • Looks fake

  • Twitter by SMS breaks the reply chain, so leaving text in for context is essential. But only in that case

  • I dont use Twitter.com. Old tweetdeck, please.

if you just reply with an @, unless my followers are following the original poster, they won't see the reply. so to RT with some context is actually spreading the message out farther and allowing my followers to join something i may find interesting with the added few words of my perspective at the front.

  • I agree, but for one, there are a TON of people (myself included) who don't use twitter.com. I use Tweetdeck, which isn't as good at showing conversations.

I also do it because I got SO tired of people asking me "What are you talking about?" when I'd reply to something they said, and then having to explain it, or explain that the link is clickable. I just find it easier to reply inline.

  • Sometimes all that's needed is to make a brief comment and further context is not required. In this case, replying adds a click that is not necessary. So I hear what you're saying, but the deciding factor is really how much you have to say.

  • I was just wondering about this today as I have been doing it the wrong way. Thank you! I do wish you would say "He and I" rather than "Him and" though! See how we help each other! @andersonb123

  • Totally changed how I use Twitter. Thanks!

  • Yes, thank you for explicitly outlining this for all the Twitter users who think that they are pros, but still have not embraced this handy context feature. It's exactly what it was designed for. Even Twitter for iPhone makes it easy with the "in reply to..." button at the bottom of a tweet. It drives me nuts just seeing the tail end of a convo that I am interested in and then having to try to go back and troll through multiple user's timelines to get the gist of what's being said.
