Even as a kid I used to think--pray-- they should split up, because Dean at least could sing and in their act I didn't find either funny; plus, Jerry seemed to me to always be taking the spotlight, blocking views of Dean, and so forth. Artistically their split was a great thing, for both of them and their future audiences: Dean really could sing well, could be funny, and had a stage persona worth developing (which the split gave him room for), and was okay as an actor.
