The Orton effect is a method of increasing the saturation of colors and adding a dreamy glow to photos. It is very easy to do, but many of the instructions do not show how to handle the over exposure that can occur. They also do not show how to control the blur in different areas of the screen.

This tutorial shows you a much better Orton effect process, and is a good introduction to layers as well.

  • Okay, I'm watching the video and trying it out as I watch, pausing as necessary. I just duplicated the layers, but then you said that if I "turn these off" I have my normal exposure there. I don't have that, and I have no idea what I did differently from you. I followed along with exactly what you were doing, I think.

  • How many minutes into the video are you at the point you have a question?

  • should i multiply both layers or just one

    how many all together

  • Group the bottom 2 layers. Group the top 4. Select the bottom of the top group, select the multiply mode for this one (and hence all above as a group).

  • Maybe he just needs to clean his ears. Oh it's a bad effect of poor hygiene hahhah!

  • uf , this is science already ...

  • Good video. I've been experimenting with a pretty basic Orton for a year or so and mostly I've loved the results. But, after watching your new techniques (new to me), I see I can be doing so much more to enhance certain images. thx

  • At about 3:20 you say to duplicate the layer 3 times (but it looks like you actually duplicate it twice, to get a total of three layers), but that if you turn two of them off you still have the normal exposure there. I don't have the normal exposure when I turn the other layers off.

  • Great tutorial...... by the way I could listen to your voice all day. :)

  • Brilliant tutorial, can't wait to try this!

  • Hey, this is a great, detailed tutorial, thank you very much for your help!
