Final project for Digital Photography

Enjoy.

Statement:

My ideas for this final multi-media project kept radically changing the more I thought about it. I knew I wanted to do my project about the concept of love because it has always been a really powerful notion for me and also some recent events in my life have shone light on the subject. I originally wanted to make the spectrum very broad and interview young, middle aged and older people. I also wanted to show examples of beginning love, and complete and established love. I realized soon that this was far too broad of a concept to fit into a 5-10 minute video. So I tried to find a very solid example of love from one of those categories. I decided on a couple that has been friends with my family for years. They have been married 55 years and counting and so I thought they would have some great insight on love and how it can be sustained. I had a lot of expectations going into the interview with this couple, and assumed that since they had been married so long and warded off the commonplace divorce statistics they must be madly in love with one another. After interviewing them for a couple hours, I found myself very disappointed. The way they talked about their relationship did not match up with my expectations at all, and at the time it seemed to me that there was no love in their relationship. After editing the project and writing out dialogue for it I think I have changed my interpretation of what love really is. I have found that love in the beginning is something exciting and powerful but overtime it transforms. A loving relationship goes through all these trials and tribulations and I think that it is that strength to survive it all that makes up love. Love is also about the ability to be so comfortable with another person that you can spend all of your time with them for the rest of your life. I think love is about two people coming together to complete each other and create this one balanced entity, working together to maintain their lives. It might not be about the passion that was there in the beginning, but then again, you cant live your whole life on pins and needles.
