American Gladiators tryouts 2-1-08

An unauthorized inside look at American Gladiators contender auditions in Austin, TX, 2-1-08.

In order, you are required to do: pull-ups (palms away, chin-high, must break 90 degrees, max in 30 sec.), up/downs (max in 30 sec, grade on intensity), carioca (15 feet, 2 passes, graded on balance/speed), 10-yd shuttle sprints (20x, must touch cone, graded on intensity).

Then you immediately sit for a 5-min interview with a show producer. They'll ask you about your personal background (make it compelling), career (something other than personal training, preferably), and ask why you think you can defeat the "monolithic" gladiators.

Advice? Don't be someone you're not. Whether you're shy or extroverted, be yourself, but be confident, have a dramatic back-story, good eye-contact, and magnify your natural personality. Smile!

what is a 90 degree pull up and is it wide armed or not

They said you had to go chin-high, but only lower until your upper arm is parallel to the floor (at a 90 degree angle with your forearm). They do not require lowering to a 'dead hang' (arms straight). You can use any grip width you like, but palms must face away from you.
