Tomb Kings Necrosphinx! Painting log part 1: base coats

Goooooooood afternoon. I'm back again with the beginnings of another of the many painting projects i have going at the moment. My attention span is best served by leaping from one to the other to stop things stagnating (i'm sorry Eldar... i'm so so sorry....).

This guy is a beast, much larger than i imagined it would be in the 'flesh'.
Let me know what you think of it so far. It's proving to be a fun paint.

@HereticDuo Cheers buddy, that's the kinda talk that'll spur me onto finishing the beast. The gold is taking a depressingly long time to finish up :P.

@Musabre Black hat miniatures? i'll have to check them out if thay have the inks.

also, if you do try the baal/devlin combo then make it about a 2 part devlin too 1 part baal since the red is a very overpowering colour when mixed with any other wash, that seems to match chestnut allmost perfectly. can't wait to see how your sphinx turns out.

@HereticDuo Indeed, i will definitely have a go with the baal/devlan combo, not thought of trying something like that before.

I also managed to nab the classic 'flesh wash' as well, which during my 2nd Ed' 40k space ork days was amazing over silver for 'oily rust' effects.

Kudos to Black Hat Miniatures for keeping the classic citadel inks alive i say ;)

@Musabre nice, i used chestnut by the bucket load back in the day, baal red mixed with devlinmud allmost matches it perfectly exept for the staining that inks do, imo it lookes better on metals unless you want the staining for something like a rusted effect.

@HereticDuo Hi there, thanks for the interesting suggestion. I happen to own a single white lion chariot that very much follows what you've suggested, though i've stuck with silver over gold, and even use a baal red washed chainmail effect for the armour.

Im still playing with different ideas with this big guy so i may well try your suggestion out during the process :)

I managed to buy the antiquated 'chestnut wash' from an online supplier so im quite excited about using that on the gold!

Interesting idea about using bleached bone with a glyphstone wash, makes it seem more like a flesh construct rather then a stone based creature. The fleshy colour on the body is very close to how i do my white lion chariots, & the metal armor plates on those seem to look best as a chainmail highlighted with mythril silver for most of the metal & a few selected areas done in shining gold washed with a mix of devlinmud & baal red & highlighted with burnished gold. it might work well on this too.
