Jules Hamilton's One Shot (Sight and Sound Film Showcase Winner)

At NYU Film school there is a very famous course known as Sight and Sound Film. We are given an Arri 16mm camera and ten 3-minute rolls of black and white film to last us the semester. When you're filming if you take your eye off the eye piece light goes into the camera and ruins your film.

I went to home depot and built a steadicam suit out of plumbing pipe, and I bought weights at Modell's to add to the back of the suit to balance everything out.

This film is one shot. There are no edits in it whatsoever. I was able to film this scene 3 times, and this was the best take. Each take was one of my entire rolls of black and white film. This took two weeks to rehearse, and the entire home had to be lit for one constant exposure because we couldn't rack apertures. We replaced a lot of the light bulbs and had to have people running around backstage to rig and break down lights as necessary.

This film was one of five showcase winners out of over 235 films in my class. It is now occasionally taught as part of the curriculum for the possibilities of what a filmmaker can do within the constraints of the class.
