[ahhhhh - angelic chorus] The "holy grail" of Doctor Who-ism (other than the Tardis perhaps)...an actual "working" sonic screwdriver, AND ...it extends...
hehe, amusing myself a little there.
Found windows movie maker - didn't know it was there, hehe - and it helped me piece a few bits together anyway - still learning.
Anyway, fall and winter are coming, and I am beginning to not feel as well, and I don't have extra funds left to spare working on doctor who projects likely for a while, so I was hoping to share and collaborate what I've come up with, with other Doctor Who fans that might be able to do similar or better.
Vid starts with me "activating the Tardis". the reason I push the button twice is that the receiver on the protoboard is only programmed to alternate on and off, so I try not to leave it in the on state. I like to use the tardis connected to the receiver, simply for a more dramatic activation response. just the power cord is connected to it, and then from inside it I soldered a couple wires where the demo switch was, so that they could be linked and activated by the receiver.
The second half, I start by showing a tiny kingston usb memory stick, which actually holds a 2gb flash chip. I had the idea months ago on my own, but had come across someone else on flickr who had done the same some months before me. Though it seemed a sort of natural thing to do anyway. The idea is so that the sonic screwdriver can in a way literally "interface with the tardis (usb hub)".
Next, I begin to take apart my newest sonic screwdriver in hopes that people can make out the details of the IR transmitter microcontroller chip and LED, that I managed to make small enough to fit into it - and thus it appears unaltered when put together.
[I tried to use pliers to pull it out, but they were too smooth and couldn't grasp it.]
Then I included at the end, a picture size-comparison of the transmitter chip.
Oh, other project ideas I have, is to put a wifi detector into a judoon scanner, and laser pointer in the master's.
So, if any fans are willing to try something as such, leave a message, and I'll include/reply more relavent information. [edit: I scratched together a page of a few pics and instructions - http://www.angelfire.com/wa/guise/sonic/sonic.html ]
How were you able to take apart the emitter head?
