It is a common belief that common swift birds (apus apus) are unable to take off from the ground. Hence, lots of people try to throw swifts in the air, expecting them to fly away. THIS IS NONSENSE, because a healthy and uninjured swift will NEVER LAND ON THE GROUND. Throwing such a bird in the air will cause enormous pain to the animal, and will cause severe additional injuries. NEVER THROW A LANDED SWIFT IN THE AIR - CONSULT A (SWIFT COMPETENT!!!) VETERINARY UNDER ALL CIRCUMSTANCES.
Since many people only believe what they see, we present a video taken at our swift clinic in Frankfurt, Germany. It shows a common swift bird starting from the ground and flying a turn in our "swift training" room, before landing in the curtain.
For more information on the German Swift Association, the clinic, swifts, and on how to help us, please check www.mauersegler.com.

  • We are located in Frankfurt, Germany.

  • i would still assist a swift into flight by throwing it

  • please try instead to just have it sitting on your hand while you stand in a "statue of liberty" position. there is really no need at all to throw it.

from our experience (with over 5000 common swifts treated in the clinic), even though a swift might seem to be healthy or fully fledged (if you raised a young one by hand), often they might not "want" to take off. in this case just wait some more days and try it again.
